Greensboro, NC (August 19th, 2021) — Even with rain delays and temperatures in the nineties, Assistant Professional Tommy Gibson, PGA of Old Town Club secured the win at the 97th Truist Carolinas Open Presented by Synergy Systems and Solutions.
Gibson started the tournament with four birdies in a row on No. 1 through 4 to get an early lead and kept it for the next fifty holes. He finished the final round carding three birdies to win by four strokes at 11-under-par, 205. This is Gibson’s second win of the 2021 CPGA season after he and fellow Old Town Club Professional Andrew Boston, PGA won the Pro-Assistant Championship in July.
“As far as play, my mindset has been kind of the same this year,” Gibson stated after his round, “just hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens. Charles, the Director of Golf at Old Town, gave me some good advice and said ‘Man if you just hit fairways and fire at less pins and just hit the middle of the green, you’ll probably have more success’ and that’s what I started doing this year.”
In securing this victory, Gibson also secured the title of 2021 Carolinas PGA Bob Boyd Player of the Year and will have an exemption to play in another PGA TOUR event.
Head Golf Professional at Mid Carolina Club Rohan Allwood, PGA finished in second place at 7-under, 209. High Point University collegiate golfer Stuart Fuller (a) finished in third place after he carded four birdies in a row on No. 3 through 6 at 6-under-par, 210.
There was a four way tie for fourth place at 5-under-par, 211 between Springfield Golf Club General Manager Aaron Black, PGA, Quail Hollow Club Assistant Professional Preston Cole, PGA, Greensboro National Golf Club Head Professional Jimmy Flippen, PGA, and Temple College senior Graham Chase (a).
