Watson Claims the 68th PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com SC Open Title

(Myrtle Beach, SC) – Grande Dunes Resort Club and Myrtle Beach gave the 68th PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com SC Open a beautiful day for the final round of competition. Play is complete and a champion has been crowned after some solid rounds posted by many players.

Derek Watson, PGA Professional at Pawley’s Plantation has been crowned our 68th PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com SC Open Champion. A player who always finishes towards the top of the leaderboard, Watson played consistent for the three-day event, not letting the weather phase him. “I just tried to make putts today and I did. The back nine was really fun,” says Watson when reflecting on his round. Shooting the low round of the tournament, 34-31=65 (-7), he bumped himself up the leaderboard to finish at 11-under par for this 54-hole championship.

Our lone female competitor in the field, Samantha Smith, General Manager at River Hills G&CC, proved her skill when she posted a bogey-free 6-under 66 in today’s round to bump her up the leaderboard nine spots and into the T-2 position, two shots back from Watson at 9-under-par. Along with Smith in the second place position is Steve Scott and Judson Holliday (a) after three solid days of play. In the fifth-place position is Zach Collins of Northridge CC who showed some very impressive play today, bumping himself up the leaderboard 15 spots with a 6-under 66 to give him a 54-hole total of 7-under par.

There was a skins competition in the second round yesterday for the professionals. Two skins were won by Dylan Thew and Bret James who made an eagle on the par-4 16th hole and a birdie on the par-4 12th hole. Congrats!

A huge thank you to the whole staff at Grande Dunes Resort Club for their amazing hospitality for the past four days. The Pro-Am was a huge success and the championship went by smoothly despite the weather, thanks to everyone’s eagerness to help in whatever way possible.

The South Carolina Open is an official Bob Boyd CPGA Player of the Year Award Presented by OMEGA points event.  Additionally, PGA Professionals’ scores count toward the True Temper CPGA Johnny Palmer Trophy.

About Grande Dunes Resort Club
Its list of prestigious accolades has grown steadily in the past decade. Grande Dunes Resort Club is an 18-hole golf course which in 2009 was named the “National Golf Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association of America.

Its spectacular layout, a Roger Rulewich Group design, is positioned on a high bluff creating a spectacular view of the Intracoastal Waterway, Grande Dunes Marina and the four-diamond resort, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes. This Myrtle Beach golf course itself is known for its superior links-style design, which offers expansive Bermuda grass fairways with subtle undulations onto large, modestly contoured greens that feature brand-new Champion Bermuda.

After a challenging game of golf, many members and visitors choose to visit the Mediterranean-styled clubhouse which includes a full-service golf shop, lockers for men and women, pub and dining areas and an outside veranda that overlooks the Resort Club’s 18th green.

Come experience what makes Grande Dunes Golf Club an unforgettable golf paradise in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
