(Charlotte, NC) – June 6, 2019 – Ryan Tyndall from the Reserve Club came out victorious in this annual state open major event. Tyndall led the field following the first round with a 1-stroke lead. Although he came into today’s round one shot back from the leader, Tyndall’s goal was to “stay patient.” “I knew if I could just calm my nerves down after the first few holes, then I could score well.” Narrowly beating out the rest of the field, Tyndall finished his round strong while he was in a three-way tie with three holes to play. Finishing birdie, par, par, the champion shot 69 in his final round for a 54-hole total of 209 (-7). “It was a good week; my putter was good this week. But it was fun out there today. I just tried to stay patient and stay in the moment.”
Two players were battling it out with Tyndall coming down the stretch but fell short by just one shot after fighting hard. Blake Taylor(a) and Kelly Mitchum tied for this second-place spot at (-6). Taylor came into the final round with a one-shot lead over Tyndall and ended up shooting 71 for the day and finishing his round with his East Carolina University teammates surrounding the 18th green, cheering him on. Mitchum shot a great round of 4-under 68 to push himself up from that third-place spot at the beginning of the day to second.
A couple players posted low scores today, tying the low score of the tournament shooting (-6) 66. Spencer Oxendine, who graduated high school last week, has signed to play golf at NC State and posted a stellar round of 34-32=66 to propel him 16 spots up the leaderboard to be tied for fourth. Drew Hackett(a) posted a card with only one bogey to also propel him 16 spots with a score of 6-under. Also finishing in that T-4 spot at a 54-hole total of 3-under par are PGA Professionals Jerry Haas and Neal Lancaster.
The week began with the Mobipaid Choate Construction NC Open Pro-Am presented by Private Estate & Universal Voice / Data on Monday, June 3. A total of 18 teams came out to compete on this beautiful day at Trump National GC, with all their net contributions benefitting PGA REACH Carolinas. Over $7,000 was raised to support the section’s foundation for the day. The Section was excited to have three former NFL players Brad Maynard, Olindo Mare, and Jason Baker as special guests for the event who “kicked off” the shotgun start with ceremonial kicks down the range. Fun was had by all and the section is thrilled to use the money raised to continue to impact lives through the game of golf.
