Gastonia, NC (June 8-9, 2021) – The 57th GSM Services North Carolina Open Presented by Universal Voice/Data concluded without a rain delay but the players did have to face light drizzle through play. Even the rain could not stop North Carolina State Junior Spencer Oxendine (a) from winning his first CPGA State Open tournament.

The first round of the 57th GSM Services Presented by Universal Voice/Data concluded without the dreaded rain delay. After heavy rain and lightning shut down the practice round yesterday, the players were hopeful that the storms would pass. One-hundred and fifty-four Carolinas golfers took on the Par 70 course at Gaston Country Club. Cedarwood Country Club Associate Professional Josh Stockwell and Oxendine finished the first round tied for first at five-under, 65. Stockwell took the lead early with back-to-back birdies on No. 1 and 2 and Oxendine slid into first in the last second with an eagle on No. 18. The pair only carded one bogey each for the round.

Northwoods Golf Professional Burke Cromer, PGA and Queens University of Charlotte Sophomore Clayson Good (a) finished the first round at four-under, 66.

Oxendine, a Fayetteville native, finished in the top 5 at both the 2019 Mobipaid North Carolina Open and the BB&T Carolinas Open and in the top 15 at the 2020 BB&T Carolinas Open. Spencer finished the first round tied for first and played consistently well through round 2 to keep and extend his lead. He carded eight birdies and an eagle during the 36-hole tournament to take the trophy with a three stroke lead at seven-under, 133.

Cromer finished in 2nd place overall with a total of nine birdies at four-under, 136. Tennessee Tech Junior Nick Sutton (a) ended the round in third place at three-under, 137. There was a three-way tie for fourth place between Stockwell, Wake Forest commit Collin Adams (a), and Bulls Bay Golf Club Professional Greg Boyette, PGA at two-under, 138.
