Mitchum Captures the 56th Mobipaid North Carolina Open Trophy
(Kannapolis, NC) – After two long days of championship golf back from a long break, the 56th Mobipaid NC Open presented by Universal Voice / Data is officially complete. The Carolinas PGA tremendously thankful to the PGA Professionals, Carolinas Golf Association staff, Irish Creek staff, and expert rules officials who conducted the event on site this week. It would not have been possible without everybody’s outstanding support!
Holding steady shooting a pair of 66 in the 36-hole championship, PGA Professional, Kelly Mitchum of Pinehurst Resort has been crowned champion! Totaling 11 birdies and only 1 bogey for the event, this seasoned professional played hard and came out on top finishing at 10-under par. Having had many wins over the years with the CPGA including being a 2-time Carolinas Open Champion and a 7-time Bob Boyd Player of the Year, this is Mitchum’s first NC Open win.
With a stellar performance in today’s final round and tying the low round of the tournament is amateur Peter Fountain of Raleigh, NC. Shooting a bogey-free 65 today, Fountain finished with a 36-hole total of 8-under-par to finish two shots begin Mitchum. Fountain put himself in a good position finishing two shots ahead of three other players coming in T3. Steve Scott (The Outpost Club), Cory Schneider (The Pointe GC), and Blake Talylor (Atkinson, NC) all carded a 36-total of 6-under-par. Scott and Taylor both shot two consistent rounds of 68 during both rounds.
Propelling himself up the leaderboard 13 spots is Matt Vick of Pinehurst No. 7 who carded 7 birdies leading him to his second round of 66 and a championship total of 5-under-par. Tied with Vick is amateur Walker Cress (Concord, NC) who also shot his way up the leaderboard a few spots, with some help from local knowledge, with a second round total of 67. Joining Vick and Cress in the T6 position is PGA Professional Aaron Black (Springfield GC) and amateur Ethan Hall (Morehead City, NC).
Rounding out our top ten is amateur Patrick Stephenson (Four Oaks, NC) who shot two solid rounds of 69 to finish at 4-under-par for the championship.
During the second round of the Professional Skins Contest, Derek Watson took home all the winnings of $780 for today with a birdie on the par-3, 8th hole.
The 56th Mobipaid North Carolina Open Presented by Universal Voice / Data is an official Bob Boyd CPGA Player of the Year Award Presented by OMEGA points event. Additionally, PGA Members’ scores count toward the True Temper CPGA Johnny Palmer Trophy, which recognizes the best scoring average for the season.
