Gibson Captures Win at the 2020 CPGA Professional Championship

July 15, 2020 (Daniel Island, SC) – The 2020 Carolinas PGA Professional Championship at Daniel Island Club has come to a close and the Lowcountry could not have presented three better days for the event.

After 54 holes of very close competition, Tommy Gibson from Old Town Club has been crowned the Champion of the 2020 CPGA Professional Championship. Posting three consistent rounds of 72, 72, 71 turned out well for Gibson, especially given the challenge Ralston Creek presented for much of the field. This consistency propelled him seven spots up on the leaderboard. Following today’s round, five players tied with Gibson for this lead position at 1-under-par, resulting in a playoff which Gibson won after 2 holes to claim the title.

Tied with Gibson at 1-under-par was Ray Franz, Ryan Tyndall, Neal Lancaster, and Matt Bova. In the playoff played on the 18th hole, Franz and Gibson both birdied it to lead them to one more hole. Gibson proceeded to birdie it again to capture the win. Franz’ card was likely one of the most consistent of any all week with only one bogey and one birdie for an even par 72 in today’s round. The T6 position features a player who carded the low round of the tournament to earn this spot. Jon Mayer shot a very impressive, bogey-free, 5-under 67 to finish the 54 holes at even par. Joining Mayer is Aaron Black whose 1-under-par round today kept him high enough to qualify and earn a top ten finish. Rounding out the top nine qualifying spots is Joseph Finemore and Christopher Finke who finished at 1-over-par.

Although they missed the qualifying cut by one and two shots, respectively, Gus Ulrich and Derek Sanders deserve some recognition for their stellar final round score of 69. Clearly every player was fighting hard for a top position. While Ulrich did not qualify, he earned himself an alternate position should any of the top nine be unable to play in the national championship.

The players competed this week for one of the nine spots in the 54th PGA Professional Championship taking place April 25-28, 2021 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Congratulations to our qualifiers who we know will represent us well next year! Tommy Gibson (Old Town Club), Ray Franz (Daniel Island Club), Ryan Tyndall (The Reserve GC), Neal Lancaster, Matt Bova (CC of Charleston), Jon Mayer (Headwaters Golf Course), Aaron Black (Springfield GC), Joseph Finemore (Croasdaile Country Club), & Christopher Finke (Linville Ridge CC).
