A message from your Area Director, Tom Mason, PGA:

It has been a tough, first half of 2018 for the Palmetto Area (Area II). Many of us have suffered through winterkill in the late part of the spring and early part of the summer. The turf problems coupled with the overly hot temperatures and bountiful rainfall have created challenges for many facilities. Luckily, many folks that I talk to are very positive on rounds played, and most facilities say they have been staying very busy. Hopefully Mother Nature will provide us with some better weather as we move into the fall months.

I would like to thank Tony Branham and Cobblestone Park for hosting our second Drive, Chip and Putt in the Palmetto Area. With the help of the section staff and the South Carolina Golf Association, we have hosted two, well attended, Drive Chip and Putt competitions (The Par Tee Golf Center hosted the first). A special thanks to all of the PGA Members who helped out with these competitions. Mike Casto, and Fort Jackson Golf Club will be hosting a Sub-Regional Qualifier in a few weeks. If you would like to volunteer to help at Fort Jackson on Saturday, August 25th, please contact Jessica at the section office or Mike Casto at Fort Jackson Golf Club.

I would also like to thank all of the PGA Professionals who participated in PGA Junior League Golf this summer. You have heard me talk about this program for the last six years. I am very passionate about PGA Junior League Golf and I am certain that once you try running a PGA Junior League Program you will see positive growth with junior offerings at your facility. Chris Sparrow and Columbia Country Club will be hosting a Sectional Qualifier on Monday, August 13th. Good luck to all of the All-Star Teams that will be taking part in the new post-season format.

I look forward to seeing everyone over the next few months. It is a pleasure and honor to serve as the Palmetto Area Director. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about section affairs, please feel free to call me at 803-600-8671 or email me at tamason7272@gmail.com. Good luck to the Gamecock and Tiger football teams this year !!!
