Cover holds the lead to win the 54th SignArt NC Open

June 7, 2018

(Kannapolis, NC) – The 54th SignArt NC Open, presented by Mobipaid, is complete. The final round took place on another beautiful day at the Club at Irish Creek with high competition amongst many players.

Amateur Patrick Cover of Cornelius, NC, came out on top with a 54-hole total of 199 (-11), conquering the course all three days. “I just tried to play a competition with myself and tried to see how far in front I could get and see how low I could take it on the course,” said Cover. This fared pretty well for him as he posted three consistent rounds of 66-67-66, holding the lead spot all three rounds.

Cover is a student at UNCW and just had an exciting end to his fourth and final year on the golf team as they won their conference championship. “Now looking forward, this win was a good way to start the summer. I have a lot of big amateur events that I’m getting ready for. I’m just trying to get ready for professional golf,” says Cover when looking forward at what is to come for his golf career. This win was definitely a great way to jumpstart his journey to playing professional golf.

Cover finished 4 shots ahead of our low Professional of the tournament, Matt Vick of Pinehurst, NC, who came to the clubhouse with a total score of 203 (-7). Vick fought hard throughout the final round with a very clean scorecard reading 66 (-4). Finish tied for third at 202 (-6) were PGA Professionals, Matt Bova of Bluffton, SC, and Cory Schneider of Powells Point, NC, and PGA Associate Tommy Gibson of Mount Airy, NC. Great playing by all competitors and congratulations to our winner!

Thank you to the whole staff and volunteers at Irish Creek for their hospitality and support throughout the event. This was the ninth straight year to host the event here and it could not have gone better.

On Monday, the tournament’s annual Pro-Am event was held, this year presented by Choate Construction and benefitting the PGA REACH Carolinas Foundation. 16 teams came out to support the Section’s Foundation and have some fun on the course. Thanks to the NC Open’s presenting partner, Mobipaid, people were able to easily take a picture of a QR Code and donate immediately in return for some very desirable mulligans on the course. The event was able to raise nearly $10,000 for PGA REACH Carolinas! We extend a huge thank you all the partners who supported the event. We were also fortunate to have the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) Charlotte/Salisbury Chapter’s Lead Instructor, Ryan Brickley, host a team of himself and three (3) veterans that participate in his HOPE program. “Big smiles and big fun,” was had by all as Neal Green, a Vietnam War U.S. Navy Seal, joyously said. Green is leagally 75% blind. The joy and excitement exuding from the veterans throughout the day was inspiring and humbling.

If you are interested in joining in sharing the game of golf with youth, veterans, and diverse populations all over the Carolinas, share or retweet the donation post on the Carolinas PGA or Mobipaid Facebook and Twitter pages. As a tournament participant, you will also be eligible to win $1,000!

The 54th SignArt North Carolina Open Presented by Mobipaid is an official Bob Boyd CPGA Player of the Year Award Presented by OMEGA points event.  Additionally, PGA Members' scores count toward the True Temper CPGA Johnny Palmer Trophy, which recognizes the best scoring average for the season.
