OMEGA CPGA Match PlayField No Match for Tyndall(Wilmington, NC) - Ryan Tyndall, PGA, of Murrells Inlet, SC captured the 2017 OMEGA CPGA Match Play Championship held at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC.
Two rounds of matches were played each day, where the field was reduced from 16, to eight, to four, to two, and, in the end, one champion stood alone.
In the second day's morning matches of the “final four,” Tyndall, the PGA Head Professional at The Reserve GC in Pawleys Island, SC, met Rick Morton, the PGA Head Professional at Rock Creek G&CC in Jacksonville, NC. As Tyndall did against his first two opponents on Day 1, he won 4 & 3. Scooter Buhrman, the PGA Head Professional at Gates Four G&CC in Fayetteville, NC, took on Zac Collins, the PGA Head Professional at North Ridge CC in Raleigh, NC. Buhrman birdied Hole #18 to force extra holes and birdied Hole #1 for the 1 up win.
In the afternoon finals match, Tyndall again got off to a hot start with birdies on four of the first six holes to take a 5 up lead. Buhrman launched a bit of a comeback, narrowing the lead to 2 up after 12 holes, but he ran out of time. Tyndall was dormie on Hole #16 (3 up with 3 to play). Both competitors tugged their drives into the left trees, pitched out, and wedged to similar distances of 15 feet. Buhrman putted first but missed. With little pressure, Tyndall cozied up his putt next to the hole, and Buhrman conceded, giving Tyndall a 3 & 2 victory.
After the win, Tyndall stated, "I played great in all four matches, managing to gain early leads each time. Obviously, leading a match is a lot more comfortable than trying to come from behind. I'm a big fan of Tom Fazio course designs. This place really set up well for my eye and my game. I'm so excited to share this win with my family."
