The team of Joe May, PGA, and Anthony Cordes scorched the course with a first round 10-under (62) to lead the field of 77 teams at the 2016 Carolinas PGA Pro-Assistant Championship Presented by Ping, Greg Norman Collection, Yamaha Golf Cars, and Four County Electric Membership Corporation held at River Landing CC in Wallace, NC. Unfortunately, the tournament was not able to overcome three suspensions due to lightning in the area during the second and final round.
During the first round, May, the PGA Head Professional at Hillandale Golf Course in Durham, NC, and his partner, Cordes, a PGA Apprentice Assistant Professional at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, combined for 10 birdies and no bogeys. Starting on the back nine to begin their round, it was May who got the ball rolling with birdies on 12, 13, and 16. An inspired Cordes then drained birdies on 17, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and capped it with another birdie on their final hole, number 9.
Close behind, the team of Chris Haarlow, the PGA Director / Instructor at Precision Golf School, and Drew Younts, a PGA Apprentice Teaching Professional also at Precision Golf School, went 31-33 for an 8-under round of 64, just two strokes back of the leaders. Haarlow and Younts combined for 7 birdies and an eagle.
Our 2015 champions Bryce Chaffee, the PGA Head Professional at the Country Club of Landfall – Dye Course, and Michael Taylor, a PGA Apprentice Assistant Professional at River Landing Country Club, turned in a round of 7-under (65) to find themselves just three shots away from a share of the title. They finished alone in third place.
The tournament's format was four-ball stroke play where two partners each played their own ball, and the lower score of the two was the score for the hole.
Presenting Partner Ping hosted a $500 Ping Golf Skills Challenge during the education and poolside celebration on Monday evening. Presenting Partner Greg Norman Collection gave every competitor a stunning Play Dry golf shirt. Yamaha Golf Cars showed off their brand new QuieTech EFI Golf Cars - the first golf car in the industry to offer independent rear suspension; plus, it is rated at 45 miles per gallon and only 60.5 decibels of noise. On hole 6, Global Golf Sales conducted a "Beverage Oasis," a closest-to-the-pin, and a skins contest. Evolve Golf held a Total Driving Challenge on hole 15 where drives were measured to determine the top 3 longest and straightest drives of the day.
The Carolinas PGA thanks Larry George, PGA Director of Golf, his staff, and the membership of River Landing Country Club for their hospitality. No club rolls out the red carpet like River Landing does.
The CPGA also thanks each of the presenting and supporting partners who are helping make the event a success.
